Giving directions to a 3-year-old child is often an exercise in futility. The child will either ignore the directions or becomes so confused about what he/she is supposed to do that the child will just abandon even trying to accomplish the task. Parents must understand the inner workings of a young child's mind. Children of this age do not have the mental capability to remember several steps in a set of directions. They also struggle to remember the directions for any length of time.
Parents can and should give the child directions, but in a manner that is suitable for the child's age and mentality. The child's mind tends to process things in chronological order. Giving a set of directions that does not follow this order can be very difficult if not impossible for the child to follow. There is also the problem of a relatively short attention span. A child might set off to do the requested task, but any distractions along the way may obliterate the original goal.
3 In 1 Crib
Giving a child short, chronological directions can help train the child's mind. When giving directions, the maximum number at any one time should be no more than three. It is important parents also consider the various steps within each direction. One direction may actually include several steps like getting a child's shoes on. The child must get socks on, get the shoes, put the shoes on and then tie the shoes.
This form of direction giving can be expanded as the child ages and becomes more familiar with each task. As the child gets older, parents will be able to add more steps to a set of directions or simply give a task and the child will be experienced with the steps necessary to complete the task.
Do you want to learn exactly how to eliminate your child's out-of-control and defiant behavior without using Punishments, Time-Outs, Behavioral Plans, or Rewards?
