If you're interested in successfully crib training your baby, please read on. With my wife's help, I did this twice, successfully, and I'm quite certain I can help you, too! It's not difficult.
I'm the proud father of two beautiful, little girls. One is 6 years old, and the other, 3. My wife breast-fed our daughters, so we had a bassinet in our bedroom. Like so many other parents with a newborn, it is very difficult to transition a baby from a bassinet to a crib. After much research and effort, we were able to do this. The following is how we did it.
3 In 1 Crib
With a newborn, it's important to establish a nightly routine or schedule. Ours was: dinner, play time, bath time, a story or a Baby Einstein DVD - this helped both girls relax. After a story or DVD, my wife or I would take our daughter to her crib. Note - Nursery setting: The nursery was dark, warm, and we had a noise machine playing either ocean or rainfall sounds.
When entering the nursery we would carefully place our daughter in her crib. If she began to cry, we would place our hand our chest and make a hushing sound for a few moments and tell her it was time to go good night. Then we would leave the room regardless if she was crying or not.
With a baby monitor downstairs, we would listen for crying. If our daughter was not crying, we were in luck. If she was crying, we would wait 5 minutes and then either one of us would go to her. As with before, we would place our hand on her chest, make the same hushing sound for a few moments, then leave the room.
While downstairs, we would listen carefully. If she continued crying, we would wait 10 minutes, then go to her. We would then repeat the same steps as before.
At this point, if our daughter continued to cry, we would wait 15 minutes before returning to her. Upon returning to her, we would repeat the same steps.
After performing these steps, approximately 15 to 60 minutes, our daughter would eventually fall asleep. To my recollection, there was never an instance where either daughter went beyond 60 minutes. After performing these steps over the course of several nights, both our daughters learned to fall asleep on their own.
A couple significant points.
1) Routine: It is imperative to remain on a nightly routine / schedule. Dinner, play time, bath time, story or DVD with a bottle. Try not to deviate.
2) Nursery / bedroom needs to be dark or dimly lit. Darkness helped our daughters fall to sleep.
3) Each time our daughters cried, we made certain they weren't hungry, in pain, or had a messy diaper. We wanted to make certain they were crying only because they didn't want to be left alone.
Stick with these steps and I guarantee you'll crib/sleep train your baby!
